Reading Comprehension
Reading Comprehension for CGPSC CSAT: passage types, inference and assumption questions, and a speed-reading plan, with original practice passages.
Chapter Overview
Reading Comprehension (बोधगम्यता) is the first item in the syllabus of CGPSC Prelims Paper II (CSAT). You get a passage, often on development, governance, environment or society, and answer questions on its main idea, tone, details, inferences and assumptions. No facts need to be memorised. What the questions test is disciplined reading: answer only from the passage, at the right scope and strength, inside a strict time budget.
What You’ll Learn
By the end of this chapter, you’ll be able to:
- Recognise the five passage types in the first two lines and know where each hides its main idea
- Sort every question into one of eight families (VITAMIN-D) and pick the right strategy for each
- Separate stated facts, inferences, assumptions and conclusions, and use the negation test for assumptions
- Eliminate wrong options using five recurring families (EOOHT)
- Budget time, and decide when an educated guess is worth it under one-third negative marking
Prerequisites
Before starting this chapter, you should be comfortable with:
- Reading Class X-level English or Hindi prose without a dictionary
- Basic fractions, for the time-budget and guessing arithmetic (Basic Numeracy)
Learning Path
Follow these topics in order. Each builds on the one before:

| Topic | Description | Time |
|---|---|---|
| Passage Types and Question Types | Five passage types, the VITAMIN-D question families, signal words, tone vocabulary, main-idea test | 12 min |
| Inference and Assumption | Stated vs inferred vs assumed, the negation test, scope and strength checks, statement–assumption format | 14 min |
| Speed-Reading Strategy | 72-second budget, stems-first reading, paragraph mapping, EOOHT elimination, guessing maths, 21-day routine | 12 min |
| Quick Revision | Every rule, test and trap from the chapter on one page | 5 min |
Where It Is Asked
| Paper | How comprehension appears |
|---|---|
| Prelims Paper II (CSAT) | Passage-based MCQs on main idea, inference, assumption, tone and detail. The paper has 100 questions, 200 marks and 2 hours, and is qualifying. The number of passage questions varies from year to year. |
| Mains Paper I (Language) | The General English section lists comprehension and précis writing. The same reading skills carry over, but the answers there are written rather than MCQs. |
| Mains essay and GS answers | Spotting an argument’s assumption is the same skill as writing a balanced “critically examine” answer. |
Comprehension connects to the rest of CSAT: Logical Reasoning tests statement–assumption and statement–conclusion logic without a passage; Decision Making turns policy passages into “best course of action” questions; Hindi Language and Interpersonal and Communication Skills reward the same close reading.
Quick Reference
Key Rules
| Concept | Rule |
|---|---|
| Golden rule | The passage is the only source of truth, so ignore outside knowledge |
| Main idea | Covers the whole passage. Not a single detail, not beyond the text |
| Where the view sits | “But is the boss”: after however, yet, unless |
| Inference | Must be true given the passage. One short step |
| Assumption | Unstated premise. Negate it, and the argument collapses |
| Wrong options | EOOHT: Extreme, Out of scope, Opposite, Half-right, True but irrelevant |
| Time budget | 120 min ÷ 100 Qs = 72 s per question |
| Guess value (+2, −2/3) | 0 eliminated: 0; 1 eliminated: +2/9; 2 eliminated: +2/3 |
Exam Focus
- High-yield: main idea or central theme, assumption, inference, author’s tone, vocabulary in context.
- Favourite traps: true-in-the-world but not in the passage; extreme words; a detail offered as the main idea; correlation offered as causation.
- Speed target: about 60 seconds per question including reading. Every topic page ends with a timed drill.
