Samas (समास)

Hindi Samas for CGPSC: the six types of compound words, samas-vigrah method, karmadharaya vs bahuvrihi traps and Hindi practice MCQs.

10 min read Updated Oct 2026 #samas#समास#hindi grammar

Prerequisites

  • Sandhi (संधि) — read it first; samas questions often place a sandhi word among the options.
  • Hindi case-markers (कारक चिह्न): ने, को, से, के द्वारा, के लिए, का/के/की, में/पर. Tatpurush samas is built on them.
  • Part of the Hindi Language (Class X level) chapter.

The Hook: The Same Word, Two Answers

Connect

At a Shivratri fair, a child points to a picture and says नीलकंठ. A teacher nearby smiles: “If you mean a blue throat, that is one samas. If you mean Lord Shiva, it is another.”

Both answers are right, because samas (समास) is decided by meaning, and meaning is shown by the vigrah (विग्रह) — the phrase you get when you open the compound.

The question this page answers: how do you open any compound into its vigrah and name its samas, and how do you avoid the classic traps where two types look alike?

Why it matters for CGPSC: samas identification is a staple of Class X-level Hindi and appears in the Hindi-language part of Prelims Paper II. In Mains Paper I (Language), Part 1 General Hindi, “समास-विग्रह” and “meanings and types of compound words” are syllabus items; a correct vigrah earns the marks.

What Samas Is

Samas (समास) = joining two or more words (पद) into one shorter word by dropping the case-markers or connecting words between them.

  • The joined word is a samasta-pad (समस्त पद) or samasik pad (सामासिक पद).
  • Opening it back into a phrase is samas-vigrah (समास-विग्रह).
  • The first word is the purva-pad (पूर्व पद), the second the uttar-pad (उत्तर पद).
Samasta-padVigrahWhat was dropped
राजपुत्रराजा का पुत्रका
रसोईघररसोई के लिए घरके लिए
माता-पितामाता और पिताऔर

The Six Types — Which Word Is “Pradhan”?

School grammar recognises six types. The quickest way to tell them apart is to ask which word is pradhan (प्रधान, dominant).

SamasPradhan padTell-tale signExamples (vigrah)
Avyayibhav (अव्ययीभाव)पूर्व पदfirst word is an indeclinable (यथा, प्रति, आ, भर, बे); whole word acts as an adverbयथाशक्ति (शक्ति के अनुसार); प्रतिदिन (हर दिन); आजीवन (जीवन भर); भरपेट (पेट भरकर); बेखटके (बिना खटके के)
Tatpurush (तत्पुरुष)उत्तर पदa case-marker is droppedराजपुत्र (राजा का पुत्र); वनवास (वन में वास)
Karmadharaya (कर्मधारय)उत्तर पदadjective–noun, or comparison (के समान / रूपी)नीलकमल (नीला है जो कमल); चंद्रमुख (चंद्र के समान मुख)
Dvigu (द्विगु)उत्तर पदfirst word is a number; the compound means a groupत्रिलोक (तीन लोकों का समूह); चौराहा (चार राहों का समूह)
Dvandva (द्वंद्व)दोनों पदऔर / या / अथवा dropped; usually written with a hyphenमाता-पिता (माता और पिता); पाप-पुण्य (पाप और पुण्य)
Bahuvrihi (बहुव्रीहि)अन्य पदneither word is the subject; the compound names a third person or thingदशानन (दस हैं आनन जिसके — रावण); लंबोदर (लंबा है उदर जिसका — गणेश)

Tatpurush (तत्पुरुष) by Case

Tatpurush is named after the case-marker that disappears. The subject case (कर्ता, ने) and address (संबोधन) do not form tatpurush.

KindDropped markerExamples (vigrah)
Both use “से”. Karan = the instrument or agent (“by means of”: हस्तलिखित — written with the hand). Apadan = separation (“away from”: रोगमुक्त — free from disease). Ask: is something being done with it, or separated from it?

Karmadharaya (कर्मधारय) — Two Patterns

PatternVigrah formulaExamples
Adjective + noun (विशेषण–विशेष्य)“… है जो …”नीलकमल (नीला है जो कमल); महात्मा (महान है जो आत्मा); महापुरुष (महान है जो पुरुष); सद्गुण (सत् है जो गुण)
Comparison (उपमान–उपमेय)“… के समान …” or “… रूपी …”चंद्रमुख (चंद्र के समान मुख); कमलनयन (कमल के समान नयन); क्रोधाग्नि (क्रोध रूपी अग्नि); विद्याधन (विद्या रूपी धन)

Dvigu and Dvandva

  • Dvigu (द्विगु): number + noun = a group. चौराहा (चार राहों का समूह), त्रिलोक (तीन लोकों का समूह), सप्ताह (सात दिनों का समूह), नवरत्न (नौ रत्नों का समूह), पंचवटी (पाँच वटों का समूह), शताब्दी (सौ अब्दों/वर्षों का समूह), त्रिफला (तीन फलों का समूह).
  • Dvandva (द्वंद्व): both words equal, joined by an implied “और” or “या”. माता-पिता, राम-लक्ष्मण, दाल-रोटी, सुख-दुख, लेन-देन (और); भला-बुरा, ऊँच-नीच (या — “अच्छा या बुरा”).

Bahuvrihi (बहुव्रीहि) — The “Third Meaning”

In bahuvrihi the vigrah ends with जिसका / जिसके / जिसकी / जो and points to someone else.

Samasta-padVigrahRefers to
दशाननदस हैं आनन (मुख) जिसकेरावण

त्रिलोचनतीन हैं लोचन जिसकेशिव
पीतांबरपीत (पीले) हैं अंबर (वस्त्र) जिसकेकृष्ण

When the vigrah decides
नीलकंठ and पीतांबर can be karmadharaya (नीला है जो कंठ; पीत है जो अंबर) or bahuvrihi (Shiva; Krishna). Without context, school grammar usually expects bahuvrihi for these named-deity compounds. In a well-set question the options or the stem settle it — look for the vigrah or the word “अर्थ में”. Prelims questions on this site avoid such double-answer words; real papers sometimes do not, so read the stem twice.

Memory Tricks

Anchor these
  • “अ-पू, त-उ, द्वं-दो, ब-अन्य” — Avyayibhav: पूर्व पद pradhan; Tatpurush (and its cousins karmadharaya, dvigu): उत्तर पद; Dvandva: दोनों पद; Bahuvrihi: अन्य पद.
  • Bahuvrihi ends in “जिसका”: if your vigrah needs जिसका/जिसके/जिसकी, it is bahuvrihi.
  • Dvigu = number + group (समूह); number + “जिसके” = bahuvrihi. त्रिलोक (group of three worlds) vs त्रिलोचन (one who has three eyes).
  • Karmadharaya = “है जो” or “के समान”: नीलकमल, चंद्रमुख.
  • Avyayibhav starters: यथा, प्रति, आ, भर, बे — यथाशक्ति, प्रतिदिन, आजीवन, भरपेट, बेखटके.

Don’t Confuse

ThisvsThat

Common Mistakes

Trap 1: Number at the start means dvigu
Not always. दशानन, चतुरानन and त्रिलोचन begin with numbers but name a third person (Ravana, Brahma, Shiva) — they are bahuvrihi. Dvigu needs the sense of a group: त्रिलोक, सप्ताह, चौराहा.
Trap 2: Writing a vigrah that is really a sandhi split
“विद्यालय = विद्या + आलय” is sandhi-vichchhed. A samas-vigrah must restore the dropped connector: “विद्या के लिए आलय”. In Mains, a “+” sign in a samas answer loses marks.
Trap 3: Karmadharaya vs tatpurush
If the first word describes the second (नीला कमल, महान आत्मा), it is karmadharaya. If a case-marker links them (राजा का पुत्र), it is tatpurush. Try both vigrahs and see which one sounds natural.

Practice

Level 1: Foundation

Write the vigrah and name the samas.

  1. प्रतिदिन
  2. गंगाजल
  3. सप्ताह
  4. सुख-दुख
  5. लंबोदर
Answers
  1. हर दिन / दिन-दिन — अव्ययीभाव
  2. गंगा का जल — संबंध तत्पुरुष
  3. सात दिनों का समूह — द्विगु
  4. सुख और दुख — द्वंद्व
  5. लंबा है उदर जिसका (गणेश) — बहुव्रीहि

Level 2: Prelims MCQs

All questions are original practice items in CGPSC style.

प्रश्न 1. ‘यथाशक्ति’ में कौन-सा समास है?

(a) तत्पुरुष (b) कर्मधारय (c) अव्ययीभाव (d) बहुव्रीहि

Answer: (c) अव्ययीभाव
यथाशक्ति = शक्ति के अनुसार. The first word यथा is an indeclinable (अव्यय), it is the dominant part, and the whole compound works as an adverb — the three marks of avyayibhav.

प्रश्न 2. ‘रसोईघर’ का सही समास-विग्रह और समास है:

(a) रसोई का घर — संबंध तत्पुरुष (b) रसोई के लिए घर — संप्रदान तत्पुरुष (c) रसोई में घर — अधिकरण तत्पुरुष (d) रसोई और घर — द्वंद्व

Answer: (b) रसोई के लिए घर — संप्रदान तत्पुरुष
The house (room) exists for cooking, so the dropped marker is “के लिए” — sampradan tatpurush. Option (a) is the most common slip; the kitchen does not “own” the room.

Answer: (d) केवल 1 और 2
Statements 1 and 2 state the standard definitions. Statement 3 is wrong: in bahuvrihi neither word is dominant — the compound points to a third (अन्य) thing, as in लंबोदर (Ganesha). Uttar-pad dominance belongs to tatpurush, karmadharaya and dvigu.

प्रश्न 4. सूची-I को सूची-II से सुमेलित कीजिए:

सूची-I (समस्त पद)सूची-II (समास)
A. चौराहा1. कर्मधारय
B. माता-पिता2. अपादान तत्पुरुष
C. नीलकमल3. द्विगु
D. देशनिकाला4. द्वंद्व

(a) A-3, B-4, C-2, D-1 (b) A-3, B-4, C-1, D-2 (c) A-4, B-3, C-1, D-2 (d) A-1, B-4, C-3, D-2

Answer: (b) A-3, B-4, C-1, D-2
चौराहा = चार राहों का समूह (dvigu); माता-पिता = माता और पिता (dvandva); नीलकमल = नीला है जो कमल (karmadharaya); देशनिकाला = देश से निकाला (apadan tatpurush — separation from the country).

प्रश्न 5. निम्नलिखित में से कौन-सा शब्द बहुव्रीहि समास का उदाहरण है?

(a) त्रिलोक (b) गंगाजल (c) दशानन (d) महात्मा

Answer: (c) दशानन
दशानन = दस हैं आनन जिसके, i.e. Ravana — a third person, so bahuvrihi. त्रिलोक is dvigu (a group of three worlds), गंगाजल is sambandh tatpurush, and महात्मा is karmadharaya (महान है जो आत्मा). Option (a) is the “number at the start” trap.

Level 3: Speed Drill — Solve in 60 Seconds

Name the samas of all eight words in under 60 seconds. For Mains Paper I, practise writing the full vigrah too — that is what is marked.

  1. हस्तलिखित 2. आजीवन 3. चंद्रमुख 4. पंचवटी 5. लेन-देन 6. चक्रपाणि 7. वनवास 8. असंभव
Answers
  1. हस्त से लिखित — करण तत्पुरुष
  2. जीवन भर — अव्ययीभाव
  3. चंद्र के समान मुख — कर्मधारय
  4. पाँच वटों का समूह — द्विगु
  5. लेना और देना — द्वंद्व
  6. चक्र है पाणि में जिसके (विष्णु) — बहुव्रीहि
  7. वन में वास — अधिकरण तत्पुरुष
  8. न संभव — नञ् तत्पुरुष

Key Takeaways

Key Takeaways
  1. Samas joins words; its vigrah restores the dropped case-marker or connector — never a “+” sign.
  2. Name the type by asking which word is pradhan: first (avyayibhav), second (tatpurush, karmadharaya, dvigu), both (dvandva) or neither (bahuvrihi).
  3. Tatpurush is sub-named by the dropped case: कर्म, करण, संप्रदान, अपादान, संबंध, अधिकरण, plus नञ्.
  4. A number at the start is dvigu only if it means a group; दशानन and त्रिलोचन are bahuvrihi.
  5. Words like नीलकंठ and पीतांबर change samas with meaning — let the vigrah decide.
