Folk Music, Dance, Theatre and Crafts
CGPSC notes on Chhattisgarh's folk songs, dances, Nacha and Pandavani, Dhokra and other crafts, and notable artists, for Prelims and Mains GS-IV.
Chapter Overview
Chhattisgarh’s culture is performed more than it is written. Women sing Sua (सुआ) around a clay parrot at Diwali, the Satnami community dances Panthi (पंथी) for Guru Ghasidas, a Pandavani (पंडवानी) singer becomes Bhima with a single tambura, a Nacha (नाचा) troupe mocks the village moneylender all night, and in Kondagaon a Dhokra (ढोकरा) caster pours molten brass into a clay mould that will be broken to release a one-of-a-kind horse. This chapter gathers all of it: songs, instruments, dances, folk theatre, crafts and the artists who carried them to the world. It is a steady scorer in Prelims P-I Part 2 because the questions are matching-type and the facts are stable, and it gives Mains GS-IV the cultural examples that make an answer about society concrete.

Where It Is Asked
- Prelims P-I (Chhattisgarh part): matching questions (dance – community, song – occasion, craft – place, artist – award), statement-based questions on Pandavani’s styles and Dhokra’s technique, and current-affairs links (Teejan Bai’s death in July 2026, new Padma awards, new GI tags).
- Mains P-VI GS-IV (social aspects of Chhattisgarh): folk culture as identity, the role of Nacha and Panthi in social reform, women in folk traditions, tribal crafts as heritage and livelihood.
- Mains Essay and Interview: “Is Chhattisgarh’s folk culture surviving modernisation?” is a natural theme; naming the right artists and forms makes the answer.
