Minerals, Energy and Industries
CGPSC notes on Chhattisgarh's minerals and mining belts, Korba power plants, Bhilai and Nagarnar steel, BALCO, cement, and the 2024-30 industrial policy.
Chapter Overview
Chhattisgarh (छत्तीसगढ़) sits on some of India’s richest rocks. It is the second-largest coal producer in the country, its only tin producer, a leading source of high-grade iron ore, and home to the Bhilai Steel Plant, the Korba power complex and the Baloda Bazar cement hub. This chapter connects the ground (minerals) to the grid (power) to the factory (industry) and to the rulebook (industrial policy and SEZs). Prelims tests location pairs and “only / largest” facts; Mains GS-III asks whether this resource wealth has become development.
What You’ll Learn
By the end of this chapter, you’ll be able to:
- Map the state’s mineral belts: Gondwana coal in the north, limestone in the centre, iron ore and tin in Bastar
- Name the key deposits: Bailadila, Dalli-Rajhara, Rowghat, Gevra, Kusmunda, Mainpat, Sonakhan, Katghora
- Match power stations to districts and owners: NTPC Korba, Sipat, Lara; the state company’s Hasdeo, DSPM, Atal Bihari Vajpayee (Marwa); Hasdeo Bango hydel
- Recall the facts of Bhilai (1959), BALCO (1965 / 2001) and Nagarnar (2023)
- Explain the Industrial Development Policy 2024–30 and the SEZ framework, including the 2026 Nava Raipur semiconductor SEZ
- Write a balanced Mains answer on mining, power and industry versus forests, tribal rights and pollution
Prerequisites
- Physical Geography of Chhattisgarh: relief, rivers and rocks that decide where minerals lie
- Minerals and Energy Resources of India: the national mineral and power map
- Industrial Policy (India): the central framework the state policies sit within

Where It Is Asked
- Prelims P-I (Chhattisgarh part): “where is it found” pairs (Bailadila–Dantewada, Dalli-Rajhara–Balod, Mainpat–bauxite, Sonakhan–gold, Katghora–lithium), plant–district pairs (Sipat–Bilaspur, Lara–Raigarh, Marwa–Janjgir-Champa), “only / first” facts (tin, first gold and lithium auctions) and industry dates (Bhilai 1959, BALCO 2001, Nagarnar 2023). Statement-based traps swap production and resource ranks.
- Mains P-V GS-III: mineral and energy resources of Chhattisgarh, industrial development and policy, the “resource curse” debate, Hasdeo Arand, pollution in Korba, and the energy transition.
- Essay and Interview: “Has mineral wealth helped the people of Chhattisgarh?” is a natural question for a candidate from the state.
