Physical Geography: Location, Relief, Rivers and Climate
Chhattisgarh physical geography for CGPSC: location and boundaries, physiographic divisions, Mahanadi and Godavari basins, climate and soils.
Chapter Overview
Chhattisgarh (छत्तीसगढ़) is a landlocked state in east-central India, covering 1,35,192 km² between 17°46′–24°5′ N and 80°15′–84°24′ E. Its relief runs high–low–high from north to south: the northern hills and pats (पाट), the broad Chhattisgarh plain drained by the Mahanadi (महानदी), and the forested Bastar (Dandakaranya) plateau drained to the Godavari. This chapter is the base for every other Chhattisgarh geography and economy chapter: agriculture, forests, minerals and population all follow from it. Prelims asks precise facts (coordinates, neighbours, peaks, river origins, soil names); Mains GS-III asks you to connect relief, rivers, climate and soils to the state’s development.
What You’ll Learn
By the end of this chapter, you’ll be able to:
- State the latitude–longitude extent, area, rank and the seven neighbouring states, with the longest and shortest boundaries
- Name the four physiographic divisions and locate the major peaks, pats and ranges (Gaurlata, Mainpat, Bailadila, Maikal, Abujhmarh)
- Describe the five river basins and the origins, courses and confluences of the Mahanadi, Shivnath, Hasdeo, Indravati, Sabari, Rihand and Kanhar
- Explain the tropical monsoon climate, the rainfall pattern and the three agro-climatic zones
- Distinguish the state’s soils, including the local Bhata–Matasi–Dorsa–Kanhar sequence
- Write Mains answers linking physical geography to agriculture, water resources and regional disparity
Prerequisites
- Physiography of India: the Peninsular plateau, Chota Nagpur and Baghelkhand
- Drainage System of India: Peninsular rivers and the Ganga system
- Indian Climate and Soils and Natural Vegetation: the national framework this chapter applies to the state
- Formation of the State and Administrative Structure: districts and divisions used to locate features

| # | Topic | What it covers | Read time |
|---|---|---|---|
| 1 | Location, Extent and Boundaries | Coordinates, area and rank, Tropic of Cancer and IST meridian, seven neighbouring states | 8 min |
| 2 | Physiographic Divisions | Baghelkhand plateau, Jashpur–Samri pat, Chhattisgarh plain, Maikal range, Bastar plateau, highest peaks | 12 min |
| 3 | Drainage: Rivers and Basins | Mahanadi, Godavari, Ganga, Narmada and Brahmani basins; tributaries, confluences, waterfalls, dams | 14 min |
| 4 | Climate and Soils | Tropical monsoon climate, seasons, rainfall, agro-climatic zones, soil types and Bhata–Matasi–Dorsa–Kanhar | 12 min |

Where It Is Asked
- Prelims P-I (Chhattisgarh part): one-liners and statement-based questions on the extent, neighbouring states, Tropic of Cancer districts, highest peak (Gaurlata), Mainpat, the source of the Mahanadi, the longest tributary (Shivnath), the Indravati and Chitrakote, basin shares, and local soil names. Match-the-following on river–dam–waterfall pairs is a natural format.
- Mains P-V GS-III (Geography of Chhattisgarh): short notes (a river, a physiographic region, soils) and longer answers on drainage and water management, the monsoon and farming, and how relief explains the distribution of minerals and population.
- Essay and Interview: the Mahanadi water dispute, climate resilience of the “rice bowl”, and development of Bastar and the northern hills.
