Tourism, Archaeological Sites and Heritage
CGPSC notes on Chhattisgarh tourism and heritage: Sirpur, Malhar, Bhoramdeo, Rajim, Chitrakote, Kanger caves, Mainpat and tourist circuits.
Chapter Overview
Chhattisgarh (छत्तीसगढ़) markets itself with a simple idea: a state where a 7th-century brick temple, a 900-year-old “Khajuraho” in the Maikal hills, India’s widest waterfall and limestone caves with blind fish are all a day’s drive apart. For the CGPSC aspirant this chapter is where the history chapters meet geography and society. The same site appears as a dynasty fact (Sirpur under the Panduvanshis), a river fact (Chitrakote on the Indravati), a festival fact (Rajim Kumbh Kalp) and a policy fact (a Swadesh Darshan circuit).
This chapter reorganises that material the way Prelims asks it, by place: which site is in which district, on which river, of which dynasty, known for what. It then adds the Mains layer: heritage conservation, eco-tourism and what tourism means for tribal communities.
What You’ll Learn
By the end of this chapter, you’ll be able to:
- Locate the major archaeological sites (Sirpur, Malhar, Tala, Arang, Tarighat, Barsur, Ramgarh, Singhanpur) and say what was found at each
- Match the major temples and monuments to their district, deity, dynasty and nickname (Bhoramdeo, Rajiv Lochan, Lakshman temple, Danteshwari, Jaitkham)
- Place the waterfalls, caves and hill stations on the right river and in the right region (Chitrakote, Tirathgarh, Amritdhara, Kutumsar, Mainpat)
- Recall the state’s tourist circuits and schemes with dates: the Swadesh Darshan tribal circuit, Ram Van Gaman Paryatan Paripath, PRASAD at Dongargarh, Swadesh Darshan 2.0
- Write a balanced Mains answer on heritage conservation and community-based tourism in tribal Chhattisgarh
Prerequisites
- Regional Dynasties: the Sharabhpuriyas and Panduvanshis who built Tala and Sirpur
- Kalachuri Dynasty: Ratanpur, Janjgir, Malhar and Shivrinarayan temples
- Physical Geography of Chhattisgarh: the rivers and plateaus that make the waterfalls
- Forests and Wildlife: Kanger Valley and the protected areas behind eco-tourism

Where It Is Asked
- Prelims P-I (Chhattisgarh part): site-to-district and site-to-river matching (Chitrakote: Indravati; Amritdhara: Hasdeo; Rajim: Mahanadi–Pairi–Sondur), nicknames (“Khajuraho of Chhattisgarh”, “Shimla of Chhattisgarh”, “Niagara of India”), dynasty of a temple (Bhoramdeo is Phani Nagavanshi, not Kalachuri) and scheme years. Expect at least one match-the-following.
- Mains P-VI GS-IV (social aspects of Chhattisgarh): heritage as part of social identity, tourism and tribal communities, religious tourism and pilgrim centres such as Giraudpuri and Rajim.
- Essay and Interview: “How can tourism benefit Bastar without harming it?” is a natural board or essay theme.
