Under Article 249, the Rajya Sabha may authorise Parliament to legislate on a matter in the State List in the national interest. Such a resolution must be supported by:
Article 249 requires a Rajya Sabha resolution supported by not less than two-thirds of the members present and voting. The resolution remains in force for up to one year and can be renewed one year at a time. It is an exclusive power of the Rajya Sabha, like Article 312 (new All-India Services).
Maratha Rule in Chhattisgarh
In 1758 the Bhonsles of Nagpur brought Chhattisgarh under direct Maratha rule. Who became its ruler, with his seat at Ratanpur?
Bimbaji Bhonsle, the youngest son of Raghuji I, ruled Chhattisgarh from Ratanpur from 1758 until his death in 1787. Raghuji I was the ruler at Nagpur, and Bhaskar Pant led the earlier Maratha campaign; after Bimbaji, Vyankoji governed through subedars rather than from Ratanpur.
Basic Numeracy
What is the compound interest on ₹10,000 at 10% per annum for 2 years, compounded annually?
Amount = \( 10000 \times (1.1)^2 = 12100 \), so CI = ₹2,100. ₹2,000 is the simple interest; the extra ₹100 is the interest earned in the second year on the first year’s interest of ₹1,000.
